It’s not a huge flood yet, but the floor feels slightly damp every time I flush. I tried tightening the bolts at the bottom, but it didn’t seem to help much, and I’m afraid of overtightening them and cracking the porcelain. Could it be a cracked tank, or maybe the wax ring just needs to be replaced after all these years? I’m not exactly a DIY expert, but I’d like to understand what’s going on before I call a plumber and get hit with a massive bill for something simple. Has anyone else dealt with this specific issue, and are there any simple diagnostic steps I can take to figure out the source of the leak?

In most cases, if you see water at the base, it’s either condensation, a loose supply line, or indeed a failing wax ring that no longer creates a proper seal. However, leaks can also originate from the tank-to-bowl gasket or even a tiny hairline crack that’s hard to spot at first glance. Before you start taking everything apart and making a mess, I’d suggest reading through a great breakdown of the most common causes and potential DIY solutions. You can find a very helpful troubleshooting guide here that explains how to identify the exact spot where the water is coming from and what steps to take for the repair. It might save you a lot of money if it turns out to be a simple fix!
